The Stagcom 11th July Round Up
The Great British sporting weekend has been and gone. Not only for the Wimbledon Final and the British Grand Prix, but great for some of the achievements by British sports people!
An incredible weekend of action came to a close with an unlikely victory last night at Euro 2016, and we've covered all the action just in case you missed anything!
Portugal Spoil the Party
The stage was set for France to claim the European Championship on home soil, but as we have come to know in football - the script doesn't always go to plan! Portugal striker Eder was the hero as he scored the only goal of the match in the second period of extra time to give Portugal their first ever major tournament win.
Things didn't start so well for Portugal; their captain, their leader and talisman Cristiano Ronaldo was injured early after a tackle from Dmitri Payet, and despite his best efforts was unable to continue. Even at that early stage of the game, the loss of Ronaldo inhibited Portugal's attacking threat and France dominated proceedings.
Golden Boot winner Antoine Griezmann had an outstanding tournament, but was unable to crown it with a goal - missing a header from close range in the second half. Andre-Pierre Gignac then hit the post in stoppage time, and at that point you started to believe that it may just be Portugal's evening.
That proved to be the case in the second period of extra time. Former Swansea forward Eder received a pass with his back to goal and managed to wriggle free from Laurent Koscielny before unleashing an unstoppable strike into Hugo Lloris' bottom right-hand corner. The win allowed Ronaldo to lift the European Championship trophy and put his name alongside the all-time greats. Well done, Portugal!
Murray Makes it Two
Andy Murray claimed his second Wimbledon title with a straight sets win over Milos Raonic yesterday afternoon - becoming the first Brit since Fred Perry in 1935 to win multiple Wimbledon titles!
Second seed Murray went into the final as favourite ahead of sixth seed Raonic, but there was some concern about how he would deal with the Canadian's monster serve. Murray soon answered those fears, breaking the Raonic serve in the first set before taking it 6-4. Murray was even able to win the point when Raonic hit the fastest serve of the tournament in the second set - it clocked a massive 147mph!
Murray was then able to win the second set on a tie break, a repeat which he followed in the third and final set to seal an impressive victory. Since reappointing Ivan Lendl as coach, Murray has won Queen's and Wimbledon looking in great form - the next aim will be to knock Novak Djokovic off the world number one spot!
Hamilton Equals Record
Lewis Hamilton equalled Nigel Mansell's record of four British Grand Prix victories on Sunday with a dominant display. Hamilton led the race from start to finish in wet conditions at Silverstone and has reduced Nico Rosberg's lead to just one point in the championship.
Mercedes teammate Rosberg was left to battle out a second place finish with Red Bull's Max Verstappen, but was later demoted to third after an illegal radio transmission. With Hamilton now so close to Rosberg, he will be confident of claiming his third championship in a row and fourth overall!
