The Stagcom 15th May Round Up
It may be Monday morning again and the weather is dull, but what a weekend we have to look back on in the world of sport!
Titles, relegations, were both decided in an exciting weekend of action. So, whether you were able to watch it all or not, here's our take on how it all unfolded!
ALL OVER
Chelsea are Premier League champions. Their fifth Premier League crown was confirmed with a 1-0 win over West Brom at the Hawthorns on Friday night. There's no doubt that that Antonio Conte's side are worthy winners after leading the league for a number of months.
The hero of the night was substitute Michy Batshuayi; the Belgian striker has been used sparingly this season but converted a Cesar Azpilicueta cross to write his name into Premier League history.
The final relegation spot was also confirmed over the weekend and it is Hull City that will join Middlesbrough and Sunderland in the Championship next season. After Swansea City's 2-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday, Hull had to beat Crystal Palace to take the relegation battle to the final day, but they were battered 4-0 at Selhurst Park.
The only matter to sort out now over the final week of the season, is the race for the top four. Arsenal can still catch Liverpool if they win their final two matches and if the Reds slip up against Middlesbrough on the final day. All matters will be settled this Sunday!
ALL SQUARE
Moving to the race to join the Premier League; both Championship play-off first legs ended level. Fulham and Reading ended 1-1 after a fiery clash at Craven Cottage. Jordan Obita gave the visitors drilled in after half-time, but Tom Cairney soon levelled with a close range finish. Reading will be more pleased with the draw after having to play the last ten minutes with ten men due to Paul McShane's red card. The return leg will take place at the Madejski Stadium tomorrow evening.
The other tie between Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday ended goalless at the John Smith's Stadium. Town had the best of the chances in the match and Wednesday had their keeper Keiren Westwood to thank for keeping them in the game. Wednesday sees the return leg take place at Hillsborough.
CHAMPIONS AGAIN
Saracens won a successive European Champions Cup after beating Clermont Auvergne 28-17 in a pulsating final at Murrayfield.
Tries from Chris Ashton and George Kruis helped Sarries into an early 12-0 lead, but Clermont responded with a converted try from Remi Lamerat. Owen Farrell stretched the lead to eight points, before a stunning try from Nick Abendanon put Clermont to within a point.
A try from Alex Goode and further points from Farrell's boot ensured Saracens retained their crown!
HAPPY HAMILTON
Lewis Hamilton drove a stunning race to snatch victory from Sebastien Vettel to win the Spanish Grand Prix.
Vettel had overtaken Hamilton to lead the first-half of the race, but an attacking move from the Mercedes team and Hamilton put him back in front and he kept control for the remainder of the race.
The win cuts Vettel's lead over Hamilton in the championship to six points.
