The Stagcom 18th July Round Up
With the football finished for a few weeks, you could be forgiven for thinking that there would have been a lull in action this weekend.
That proved not to be the case as there were enthralling finales to both the golf and the cricket! If you were out yesterday making the most of the sun, don't worry - we've got it all covered for you.
Stenson Wins First Major
Henrik Stenson produced a stunning final round at Royal Troon to win The Open, yesterday. The Swede shot a final round of 63 to finish 20 under par - beating Tiger Woods' lowest ever score of 19 under at a major!
It is Stenson's first ever major win and was well worth the wait. Phil Mickelson fought with Stenson all the way and scored an impressive 17 under overall - a score that would have won the American the championship on 140 of the 144 previous tournaments!
England Defeated
Pakistan beat England by 75 runs to win the First Test at Lord's in a thrilling encounter. England were set a target of 283 in the final innings, but an inspired bowling display from the tourists halted any hopes for Alastair Cook's side.
Jonny Bairstow, Gary Ballance and James Vince all gave England hope of reaching the target, but none of them failed to make it out of the 40's. Pakistan spinner Yasir Shah ripped through the England line up to finish with 10 wickets in the match.
The victory was sealed by Mohammad Amir who was playing his first Test since being banned for spot-fixing back in 2010. England will need to up their game for the Second Test at Old Trafford if they are to claw their way back into the series.
Great Britain Could Defend Crown
Great Britain reached the semi-finals of the Davis Cup over the weekend after beating Serbia 3-2 overall. Kyle Edmund sealed victory for Britain with a straight sets win over Dusan Lajovic to put his side 3-1 up with only one match remaining.
The win was made all the more impressive by the fact that Wimbledon champion Andy Murray sat out of the tie as he continues to rest after his triumph. The Scot was still there to support Great Britain and should be back for the semi-final against Argentina.
Fleeing Foxes
Last season's unlikely Premier League champions look to be paying the price of success as N'Golo Kante was sold to Chelsea for £32m over the weekend. The French midfielder was one of the stars of Leicester City's title winning season, but has chosen to move to London to work with new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.
The bad news doesn't stop there for the reigning champions. Reports over the weekend suggested that PFA Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez has rejected a new contract as he seeks a move away from the King Power Stadium!
