The Stagcom 20th June Round Up
While the rain continues to fall and our barbecues gather dust, we have been resigned to indoors again this weekend. Fortunately for us lads, there has been plenty of sporting action to keep us entertained!
From records being broken, to the bizarre, this weekend has thrown so much at us, and we have kept on top of it all (someone has to) so that we can recap for you below! Oh, as well as not forgetting the bonus weekend event tonight...
England Rewrite History
England produced a heroic performance to win the second Test in Melbourne and complete their first ever series win in Australia!
England skipper Dylan Hartley went over in the first-half and Owen Farrell scored a penalty to go 10-0 up. Australia replied with a try from Stephen Moore, before Farrell gave England a six-point lead at the start of the second half - with another penalty.
Australia then threw everything they had at England with waves of attacks and all of the territorial pressure. The tourists refused to let their backline be breached and their defensive work was rewarded in the final stages when Farrell scored a try and converted a penalty to give England a historic 23-7 win!
Murray Wins Record Title
Andy Murray became the first man to win the Queen's Club title five times after defeating Milos Raonic. The Brit clawed his way back from a set and 3-0 down to win for a record time, and prepare perfectly for Wimbledon.
Murray, playing his first tournament since teaming back up with coach Ivan Lendl, was unfortunate to lose the first set to a tie break. Raonic broke early in the second to go 3-0 up but that sparked Murray into action and he broke the Canadian's serve twice on his way to winning the set.
Murray grew stronger with the finish line in sight and comfortably won the third set 6-3 to claim his fifth title.
Johnson's Win Surrounded by Controversy
Dustin Johnson claimed his first major win at the US Open in farcical circumstances. The American shot an impressive five-under round, but received a one-shot penalty for moving his ball on the fifth hole.
At first, Johnson was absolved of any punishment but was then later told that he may face a penalty stroke at the end of his round. Ultimately, the shot penalty didn't matter as Shane Lowry faltered on the final day to finish three shots behind Johnson.
Despite that, Rory McIlroy labelled the organisers of the tournament 'amateur' and Jordan Spieth called the penalty decision 'a joke' after the punishment to Johnson.
Rosberg Races Ahead
Nico Rosberg controlled the European Grand Prix to regain a commanding lead over Lewis Hamilton in the championship. Rosberg led the race from the first corner, as Hamilton could only find his way to fifth after starting 10th on the grid.
World champion Hamilton now finds himself 24 points adrift of Rosberg in his pursuit of a fourth world title, and can ill afford many more races like this if he wants to catch the championship leader.
Ireland Struggle
The Republic of Ireland must now beat Italy to stand any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of Euro 2016 after a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Belgium.
The Irish came up against an inspired Romelu Lukaku who netted twice either side of an Axel Witsel goal. Martin O'Neill's side will now need to produce a big performance against Italy - who have won both of their games so far.
The Weekend Continues
England take on Slovakia in their final group game tonight. A win would guarantee top spot in Group B for Roy Hodgson's side, and should secure an easier game in the last 16.
Whatever happens, it's not very often you have an excuse to have a few beers with the lads on a Monday night - so make the most of it!
