The Stagcom 6th March Round Up
Well, that was what weekends are all about! Loads of sporting action, with just as many talking points to get stuck into.
It was one of those weekends where you were best served to stay in front of the television, with a fridge full of beers and have the lads round.
If you weren't in such a fortunate position to do just that; allow us to take you through the stand out stories from the weekend.
Bellew Wins
Tony Bellew upset the odds to defeat David Haye in a pulsating heavyweight contest at London's O2 Arena.
Haye seemed to be in the ascendency in the early rounds, but the favourite injured his Achilles in the sixth round and Bellew pounced to knock his opponent down. Haye bravely battled on, with his ankle heavily strapped, but was unable to move freely and Bellew took control.
In the 11th round, Bellew floored Haye again, which led to his corner throwing in the towel and the fight coming to an end. After all of the pre-fight hype, it was a contest that certainly delivered, but there is certainly a case of 'What If?' after Haye's injury.
It feels like there is unfinished business, and there is a good chance of a rematch taking place in the future. Bring it on!
Action Packed Prem
There were plenty of talking points in yet another action packed weekend in the Premier League; starting with the 1-1 draw between Manchester United and Bournemouth Saturday lunchtime.
Marcos Rojo opened the scoring, before a Josh King penalty levelled the match; but the game was overshadowed by the battle between Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Tyrone Mings. The Bournemouth defender appeared to stamp on Ibrahimovic's head, before the United striker exacted revenge with an elbow shortly after. Both escaped punishment on the day, but both are likely to receive retrospective bans.
Liverpool responded from their disappointing defeat to Leicester City, with a 3-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday evening. The big story surrounding the game was Arsene Wenger's startling decision to drop Alexis Sanchez from his starting line-up. Wenger's decision was made to look even worse after Liverpool dismantled Arsenal in the first-half; with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane scoring. Sanchez was introduced at half-time and set up Danny Welbeck to give the Gunners hope, but Gini Wijnaldum sealed the win for Liverpool in injury time to put Liverpool ahead of Arsenal and into the top four.
Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City sit in second and third, respectively, after winning on Sunday. Spurs beat Everton 3-2 at White Hart Lane, and had Harry Kane to thank again as he scored a double; Dele Alli grabbed the other. City defeated Sunderland at the Stadium of Light thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane.
Murray Claims Title
Andy Murray defeated Fernando Verdasco in straight sets to win his maiden Dubai Championships title.
Murray recovered well after dropping his first two service games to win 6-3 6-2 in just over an hour. It is the world number one's first tournament win of 2017 and the 45th of his career.
There will no time for celebrating for Murray as he now jets off to Los Angeles, with the Indian Wells Masters getting underway next week.
England Win Series
England beat West Indies in the second one-day international to win the three-match series with a game to spare.
Liam Plunkett was the pick of the England attack, taking 3-32 as West Indies could only manage a modest score of 225.
Jason Roy scored a century for England, but then the West Indies bowlers hit back to give England a scare. A 90 from Joe Root and 68 from Chris Woakes put on an unbeaten 102 to see England through with ten balls to spare.
The final match of the series takes place in Barbados on Thursday.
