The Stagcom 7th November Round Up
Bonfire night weekend really did live up to its title. There were fireworks, drama and cause for celebration; and that's just in the world of sport!
Let us give you the run down on everything that happened this weekend!
New Leaders
It was another weekend to savour in the Premier League with some enthralling games with plenty of goals; in fact every team scored this weekend!
Liverpool certainly knew were the back of the net was as they dismantled Watford 6-1 to move to the top of the league. The Reds were in scintillating form going forward yet again and had five different goal scorers; Sadio Mane (2), Emre Can, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Georginio Wijnaldum got the goals for Jurgen Klopp's side.
Chelsea are now up to second after a thumping 5-0 victory over Everton on Saturday evening. Since losing to Arsenal a few weeks back, Antonio Conte's side have gone on a five-match winning run without conceding a goal. Chelsea's form has coincided with a switch to a 3-4-3 formation which has seen Eden Hazard flourish. The Belgian forward was in fine form as he scored two goals; Diego Costa, Marcos Alonso and Pedro were the other scorers.
Manchester City have slipped down to third after a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Middlesbrough. Sergio Aguero gave City a first-half lead when he converted a Kevin de Bruyne cross, but they couldn't find the second goal to kill the game off. Boro made them pay with a last minute equaliser; Marten de Roon headed in a George Friend cross to give his side an unlikely point.
Arsenal and Spurs now occupy fourth and fifth place after a 1-1 draw in the North London derby. Kevin Wimmer converted a Mesut Ozil free-kick into his own goal to give the Gunners the lead, but Harry Kane levelled things up with a second-half penalty after Laurent Koscielny felled Moussa Dembele.
FA Cup Shocks
The FA Cup is renowned for throwing up shocks each year and the First Round of the oldest cup competition in the world was no different this weekend.
The lowest-ranked team of the First Round, Westfields, are still in the competition after they earned a replay against National League North side Curzon. Craig Jones' first-half penalty looked like it may give the Hereford club an unlikely victory, but with nine minutes remaining Adam Morgan equalised from a corner.
Non-league side Solihull Moors earned a draw away at League Two Yeovil, but will have to do without their Manager Marcus Bignot for the replay. He has just been appointed boss of Grimsby Town who got knocked out by Bolton on Saturday.
Another side to cause an FA Cup shock were Macclesfield of the National League. A John McCombe header gave the Silkmen a 1-0 win away at League One's Walsall; who sit 46 places above them!
Number One
Brand new world number one Andy Murray celebrated his latest accolade by winning the Paris Masters title. Murray defeated America's John Isner 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 to win his first Paris Masters title to celebrate a stellar week in his career.
The victory was Murray's sixth ATP title of 2016 and he has also won his second Olympic and Wimbledon titles on his way to the top of the rankings. Today he has been officially confirmed as Britain's first singles number one since computerised rankings were introduced in 1973.
Murray is now all but certain to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2016.
