The Stagcom 9th May Round Up
It was a glorious weekend of weather for us all, with everyone dusting off their barbecue. There was also some great sporting action over the weekend, so if you were too busy turning the sausages here's what you may have missed!
Captain Morgan
The biggest moment of Wes Morgan's career arrived on Saturday! The Leicester captain got to hold the Premier League trophy aloft as he and the other players and staff celebrated their extraordinary triumph at the King Power Stadium. I think it's fair to say, unless you supported one of the Foxes' title rivals you were fully behind this magnificent achievement. Claudio Ranieri's side put on a performance of champions, too, registering a total of 33 shots against Everton on their way to a 3-1 win. Two goals from Jamie Vardy and one from Andy King sealed the deal. King will have been particularly with his contribution to the scoresheet; he's now won League One, The Championship and the Premier League with the East Midlands club!
Sunderland Safe?
We should have seen this coming! Year on year Sunderland seem to claw their way out of relegation trouble at the death after they've been written off by everyone else. Well, this season looks set to continue that trend! The Mackems gained a massive three points in a 3-2 win over Chelsea to lift themselves out of the relegation zone - ahead of local rivals Newcastle who could only muster a draw at already-relegated Aston Villa. Sam Allardyce and his side now know that one win in their final two matches will guarantee Premier League football at the Stadium of Light next season, and condemn Newcastle and Norwich to relegation.
Football League Matters Decided
The final round of fixtures in the Football League this weekend saw all matters of promotion, relegation and play-offs in the Championship, League One and League Two confirmed. Middlesbrough managed to get the draw they needed against Brighton in the '£170m game' to gain promotion back to the Premier League after seven years away. Brighton will now go into the play-offs along with Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County and Hull City to battle it out for that last promotion place. Burton Albion hung on to second place in League One to achieve promotion to the Championship; a remarkable achievement for a club of their size! In League Two, Bristol Rovers claimed the third automatic promotion spot after beating Dagenham and Redbridge in the final minute. Accrington could only manage a draw against Stevenage.
Khan KO'd
Amir Khan suffered a sixth round knockout as he lost to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in Las Vegas over the weekend. Talk in the pre-fight build-up was that Khan would struggle against such a strong opponent, especially as he moved up two weight divisions.
The British fighter will take heart from the fact he wasn't disgraced by his Mexcian counterpart. Khan matched Alvarez in the first five rounds previous but fell to a devastating one-punch knockout in the sixth, sending his dreams crashing.
This isn't the end of the road for Khan, it looks as though his next fight will see him go up against fellow British boxer Kell Brook. Should be a cracker!
