The Stagcom 3rd October Round Up
Another weekend has passed, and another has most certainly delivered. You could have been forgiven for staying in this weekend to soak up all the sporting drama that unfolded.
The Ryder Cup - as it always does - delivered incredible passion and some breath-taking matches. It was an interesting weekend in the Premier League and there was more controversy in the formula one. Let us recap it all in full for you.
USA Regain Ryder Cup
Team USA blew away Team Europe to win back the Ryder Cup for the first time since 2008 with a 17-11 victory at Hazeltine. For European supporters there was hope that Darren Clarke's team could mount a Medinah-style comeback on the final day, but that never materialised and the hosts were comfortable winners.
Europe were up against it from day one after losing all of the Friday morning foursomes to go 4-0 behind. By the end of play on Saturday, Europe had managed to claw their way back into contention and trailed by just three points going into the final day. However, USA dominated the singles matches on Sunday to win convincingly. Europe will now have to wait until 2018 for revenge when the Ryder Cup will be held in Paris.
Premier League Update
There's only one place to start when looking back at the weekend's action from the Premier League; and that's at White Hart Lane where Spurs beat Man City 2-0. Going into the game, City had won all of their first six games of the season, but were well beaten by a stunning performance from Mauricio Pochettino's side. Spurs pressed City high up the pitch, which seemed to rattle the visitors and an own goal from Aleksandar Kolarov and a Dele Alli strike gave Spurs the win that their performance merited and took them to within a point of City.
Arsenal are next in the table in third after a last gasp win over Burnley in controversial fashion. The game looked to be finishing goalless until the last action of the match when Arsenal had a corner. The ball was worked into the box and Alexis Sanchez flicked it onto the back post where Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain bundled the ball onto Lauren Koscielny and in. Replays showed that the ball went in off Koscielny's hand, but Arsene Wenger will have been glad with his side's good fortune on his 20th anniversary as Gunners boss!
Man United lost ground in the title race after a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Stoke. Second-half substitute Anthony Martial looked to have claimed all three points with a curling effort, but Joe Allen poked home late on to give the Potters an unlikely point.
Hamilton Not Happy
Lewis Hamilton's car went up in smoke yesterday at the Malaysian Grand Prix and his title hopes may have gone with it! Hamilton was dominating the race until his engine failed and flames began to pour from his Mercedes on lap 43.
Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg managed a third place finish to open up a 23-point lead at the top of the standings with just five races remaining. Hamilton was left furious and demanding answers from Mercedes, as he claimed he is the only Mercedes driver suffering engine failure.
It was a day to celebrate for Red Bull as they took places one and two in the race - Daniel Ricciardo just managed to beat Max Verstappen in a gripping race.
