The Stagcom 6th June Round Up
Well, that weekend flew by! After a bank holiday weekend, a standard weekend seems all that bit quicker. Still, that doesn't mean there wasn't enough time for plenty to happen over the weekend, with some sad news to report as well.
The Greatest
Sad news struck the world over the weekend, when it was announced that Muhammad Ali had passed away. Ali was taken into hospital late last week with a respiratory problem and died due to septic shock. The former Heavyweight champion of the world is widely regarded as one of the most significant sporting figures of the 20th Century for his achievements both in and out of the ring. Ali won an impressive 56 of his 61 professional fights and will be sadly missed.
Murray Suffers Djok-Out Blow
Novak Djokovic turned on the style to defeat Andy Murray in the French Open Final on Sunday. Murray was looking to become the first Brit since Fred Perry to claim the French title, and looked as though he might, after taking the first set 6-3. However, Djokovic then blew Murray away to win the next three sets and claim his 12th career Grand Slam. The Serb is now the first player to hold all four Grand Slams at once, since Rod Laver in 1969!
Vardy to Arsenal?
News broke over the weekend that Arsenal had met Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy's release clause. The Gunners have put forward a reported bid of £20m that allows the club to talk to Vardy and they are apparently willing to double the England striker's wages. The 29-year-old had a season to remember where he won the Premier League title with the Foxes as well as breaking the Premier League record for scoring in consecutive matches! If reports are true, Vardy will make a decision on his future today. Tense times for Leicester fans!
Wales Worry
Wales suffered a 3-0 hammering at the hands of Sweden on Sunday in their Euro 2016 warm up match. It was less than ideal preparation for Chris Coleman's side before they face Slovakia in their Group B opener on Saturday. There is cause to be more optimistic for Saturday as Wales will have the likes of Gareth Bale, Joe Allen, Joe Ledley and Hal Robson-Kanu available for selection again.
